While pictures in the travel guides handily prepared us for many of the breathtaking views we encountered on our Gold Coast trip, we weren’t expecting to be so impressed with the suburb of Burleigh Heads. As soon as we arrived, we immediately saw why this place has received so many favourable reviews. Any local will tell you that Burleigh is the place to go if you want to experience the magic!
Burleigh Heads is home to a beautiful national park as well as one of Australia’s most well-known surf breaks. It’s easily understandable why this headland has served as a gathering spot for Aboriginal people for thousands of years. Sure, Surfers Paradise and Broadbeach’s sparkling, famous skylines placed us on the worldwide tourist map. But it’s Burleigh, the bohemian hamlet flanked by a coastal national park, that oozes the genuine spirit of why many people choose to live here.
You can’t help but fall in love with this unpretentious slice of Aussie paradise, whether it’s the delightful James Street and its boutique finds, the always festive atmosphere of Burleigh Hill, or the fact that locals seem to be walking around with a welcoming smile on their faces.
Places we enjoyed exploring while in Burleigh Heads
1. Burleigh Beach
Burleigh Beach, at the heart of Burleigh Heads, is one of the most popular beaches on the Gold Coast, thanks to its laid-back feel, surf appeal, and unrivalled views of Surfers Paradise and Burleigh Head National Park.
The headland section of the beach offers ideal surfing conditions for beginners and experts, as well as first class beachside cafe eating at Burleigh SLSC and immaculate white sand for resting, strolling, and picnics. Simply stated, it’s a beach not to be missed.
2. Burleigh Head National Park
Burleigh Head National Park, located on the headland, provides a casual rainforest bushwalk with scenic picnic places, animal viewing, and spectacular ocean vistas, to name a few fascinating activities. This park also has rainforest, eucalypt woodland, pandanus groves, tussock grassland, coastal heath, and mangroves. On its northern side is a notable Australian surfing point break.
Burleigh Head National Park is also a great place to see migratory humpback whales from May to August!
3. Cock Rock Burleigh
For adventure seekers like us, you’ll surely enjoy the breathtaking and instagrammable view of Cock Rock Burleigh. This climbable natural rock structure offers magnificent views of the Pacific Ocean and Surfers’ Paradise. Of course, appropriate footwear is advised if you want to take the perfect shot.
4. Restaurant Dining Near Burleigh Beach
There are several restaurants to choose from near Burleigh Beach. Burleigh’s eating destinations include Goodwin Terrace, the Gold Coast Highway, James Street, and Connor Street. All of which is just a short walk from Burleigh Beach and will not disappoint foodies like us. Highly acclaimed top seafood restaurants in Queensland are also here in Burleigh, like Rick Shores, Rabbath, Jimmy Wah’s, Mr Hizola’s, Pepe Italia, and The Fish House. These popular restaurants will surely satisfy your cravings after a tiring but enjoyable day tour.
5. The Village Markets in Burleigh
One thing that you should not miss when in Burleigh Heads is the local markets, held every weekend. You can get anything from fresh regional fruit to street cuisine, handcrafted gifts, pre-loved apparel and jewellery. The Village Markets, held at Burleigh Heads State School on the first and third Sundays of each month, are the most diversified and well-attended. The Burleigh Heads State School Farmers Markets, held every Saturday, and the Art and Craft Markets in Justins Park on the last Sunday of each month, are two other options.
I will not hesitate to recommend these places to you because they’re a sure fire hit for tourists who seek adventure and fun. We will definitely go back for more adventure next time soon!
It’s Time to Party!
We’re invited to an exclusive party at a friend’s beach house on the last day of our trip. It was held on his newly built, spacious, and beautiful deck, made by a professional decking builder according to his specifications. We thoroughly enjoyed the delectable food and refreshing cocktail beverages, as well as the stunning view from the beach. We ended the day with laughs while watching the spectacular sunset. It’s a memory worth cherishing!
